Support for Friends and Family

If you are reaching out because you are concerned about a Veteran or Service Member, we are glad you are here. It takes a lot of courage to step up for someone else, and your support can make a significant difference in their journey toward wellness.

While our specialized ROGER services are designed for the Veteran or Service Member to connect with us directly, you play a vital role in helping them get there.

How You Can Help Right Now

Supporting someone in a difficult time doesn't require you to be a mental health expert, just a steady, honest friend. Here are three ways to be there for them:

  • Ask the question directly: If you feel like something is wrong, don't be afraid to ask. Using the word "suicide" clearly and calmly is okay. Asking, "Are you thinking about suicide?" shows them that you are a safe person to talk to and that you aren't afraid of the truth.
  • Listen without trying to "fix" it: You don't need to have the perfect advice or a solution to their problems. Often, the most helpful thing you can do is listen. Let them talk, stay calm, and let them know they don't have to carry their burden alone.
  • Help them find the next step: When someone is overwhelmed, even a simple phone call can feel impossible. You can help by providing them with a direct way to get support. Let them know there is a team that specifically understands the military experience and is ready to help. If they seem ready to make that call, you can reach our team at 1-833-697-6437.

A Message to Share

We have created email and text templates you can use to help encourage the Veteran or Service member you are concerned about to reach out to us. It is written to be empathetic and low-pressure, making it easier for them to take that first step.

Subject: Thinking of you

Hi [Name],

I've been thinking about you lately and wanted to check in. I can tell things have been tough, and I want you to know that I'm in your corner and I care about what you're going through.

I know it's not always easy to ask for help, especially when you're used to being the strong one. You don't have to figure this all out on your own.

I've found a team called ROGER that works specifically with Veterans and Service Members. They really get the military experience and they're great at helping people find a path forward. I'd really like for you to reach out to them.

You can connect with their team two ways:

They are there whenever you're ready.

Best,
[Your Name]
